Undergraduate Programme

Introduction

All applicants for admission into Nnamdi Azikiwe University shall have attained the age of 16 (sixteen) years by the first day of October of the year of admission. The minimum age for admission into the Continuing Education Programme (CEP) is twenty-two (22) years.

  • Admission into Regular Undergraduate Programmes
  • Admission through the Universities Matriculation Examination (UME)

Applicants who have sat for the University Matriculation Examination (UME) may be admitted         into the first year degree Programme if:

(I). They attain the approved UME minimum score and satisfy the university assessment in the post UME screening,

(I.) By the first day of October of the year of admission they posses at least one of the following qualifications. The Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) or the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary level) or equivalent certificate with credit level passes in at least five subjects, including English language obtained in not more than two (2) sittings.

–      The Teachers Grade Two Certificate with credit or merit passes in at least five subjects,         including English language in not more than two (2) sittings;

(III) They satisfy the Faculty/Department entry requirements for the programmes of their choice as     approved by Senate.

Note: October/November GCE/NECO obtained in the year of admission shall not be accepted for   registration.

 Admission by Direct Entry

Applicants for admission by direct entry shall:

(I)          Meet the requirement in 2.2.1 (ii) and (iii)above,

(Ii)         Posses at least one of the following qualifications

–  At least 2 (two) subjects passed at the Advanced or Principal Level of GCE/HSC;

– Passes at the credit/merit level in at least two major subjects in the NCE;

– Minimum of a lower credit passes at the ND or Nnamdi Azikiwe University Diploma in the relevant discipline,

-A first university degree or HND or its equivalent;

-Any other qualification acceptable to Senate.

Admission from Pre-Science Programme

Offer of admission shall be made to those candidates who have successfully completed the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Pre-Science programme and who:

(I)    Posses the Senior Secondary School Certificate or the General Certificate of Education (ordinary level) or equivalent certificate with passes at credit level in at least five subjects obtained in not more than two

(2) Sittings and including at least two science subjects chosen from Agricultural Science/Biology,  Chemistry, Further Mathematics/Mathematics, Health Science, Home Economics/Home Management, Physics or any such science subject (s) acceptable to Senate.

(Ii)  Pass the final examination in the Pre-Science programme with at least 200 marks and attain the approved UME minimum score for the University for that year.

(iii)     Scored at least 50% in the subject (s) required to remedy any deficiency in  the Faculty/Departmental entry requirements.

(iii).    Paid all the prescribed fees of the Pre-science Unit.

Admission by Inter-University transfer

(I)  Inter University transfer admission into Nnamdi Azikiwe University shall not ordinarily be allowed except exceptional circumstances to be determined by the University Admissions Committee.

(i)  Where the committee decides that it is necessary to admit a candidate on inter-University transfer, such a candidate who must be in good academic standing and has spent at least one academic year in a recognized University, may apply for transfer to continue with his current programme of study or transfer into a new one.

(iii) Transfers shall not be allowed into the first year of any programme a candidate requesting transfer shall:

–      Must have been duly admitted and possess valid Admission Letter from JAMB;

–      Meet at least one of the admission requirements in 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 above, for the year of study into which he wishes to transfer.

–      Satisfy Faculty/Departmental transfer requirements.

–      Return a completed transfer form, obtained from Registrar at the prescribed fee;

–      Ensure that the Registrar of his current university forwards his full transcript to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka;

–     pay the necessary prescribed fee for verification of his certificates and transcripts;

–    Successfully undergo verification of the certificates and transcripts.

(iv)  All completed transfer forms shall be processed by the Dean of the Faculty and the Head of  Department to determine appropriate course of study, waivers, year of study and the year of        admission.

(v ) The  results of (iv) above shall be presented to tie admissions committee of Senate for consideration and approval.

(vi) If admitted the student shall:

–    Earn waivers for only those relevant courses passed in his previous university;

–    Receive a formal letter of transfer/admission from the Registrar stating the department, the programme into which admitted, waivers granted, the year of study and the session the candidate shall be registered in.

(vii)  All transfers shall-be completed before the registration week of each academic session.

Admission by Inter-Departmental Transfer

(I)  Inter-departmental transfers shall not ordinarily be allowed.

(I) No transfer shall, however, be allowed into the first or final year of any programme.

(III)Transfer into the Faculties of Law, Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences shall be allowed after one (1) academic session.

(iv) Applicants for transfer into the Faculty of Law and Medicine must have a CGPA of not less than      4.00.

(v)  Applicants for transfer into the faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences must have a CGPA of not less than 3.5.0.

(vi)  Any student who has any course outstanding shall not be qualified.

(vii) Transfers other than those described above are not permitted except when transfer even If his CGPA is above the required minimum. One is asked to change department on account of poor academic standing.

(vii) Approved transfer attracts a transfer fee of one hundred thousand Naira only (N100,000.00)

(ix)  For staff children the transfer fee is fifty thousand Naira only (N50,000.00). For all transfers a candidate shall:

–    Apply through the Registrar on the prescribed form enclosing photocopies of qualifying certificate (s), and certified statements of results for all semesters spent so far.

–    meet the admission requirements applicable to the year of study of the programme into which he seeks transfer;

-.  satisfy the Faculty/Department transfer requirements

–   earn waivers for only those relevant courses passed in his former Department;

–  the remaining courses that he did not earn waivers shall appear in the official academic record of the student but she’ not be taken into account in determining his final CGPA.

–  collect from the Admissions Office a transfer letter stating the new programme, the approved year of study and the course for which waivers had been granted.

(xi) All completed transfer forms shall be processed by the Faculty Board and the Departmental Board involved in the transfer, to determine appropriate programme of study, waivers and year of study.

(xii)    All transfer cases shall be presented to the Admissions Committee of Senate for consideration and approval.

(xiii)  On approval of the transfer, the Registrar shall convey the approval to the. Candidate.

Deferment of Admission

(I)     Candidates to be considered for deferment of admission shall be only those candidates admitted through UME or Direct Entry.

(ii)     All such candidates must have completed the registration formalities and paid the prescribed school fees for the session.

(iii)    Application for deferment of admission shall be made to the Registrar through the Dean of Faculty, through the Head of Department and shall be made within the first two (2) weeks of the session

(iv)    All such applications shall be presented to Senate for approval.

(v)    The Registrar shall convey Senate approval to the candidate.

(vi)   Deferment shall be for a period of one academic year.

Admissions into Part-Time Programme

Any candidate seeking admission into any of the part-time programmes of this University shall apply to the respective units by obtaining and Completing the necessary forms.

The Continuing Education Programme (CEP)

All applicants for admission into the CEP are expected to:

(i)       Complete and submit to this University an application form for admission

(ii)     Satisfy either 2.2.1 (ii) & (iii) or 2.2.2

The Sandwich Programme

All applicants for admission into the Sandwich Programme shall:

(I)     Complete and return to this University an application form for admission specifying the programme into which admission is sought.

(Ii)    Possess the same qualifications as for the regular programme.

Admission into the Remedial Programme

All applicants for admission into the Diploma Programme shall:

(i)     Complete and return to this University an application form for admission specifying the programme into which admission is sought.

(Ii)     Possess the same qualifications as for the regular programme.

The Pre-Science Programme

Nnamdi Azikiwe University operates a Pre-Science programme for science based courses. All applicants for admission into the Pre-Science programme must:

(i).     Complete and submit to the Pre-Science Unit an application for admission on the prescribed form obtained from that Unit.

(li).     Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate or the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) or equivalent certificate with passes at credit level in at least five (5) subjects obtained in one or two (2) sittings and including at least two science subjects chosen from

Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Health Science/Biology, Home Economic/Home Management, Mathematics/Further Mathematics Physics or any such science subject (S) acceptable to Senate.

 

REGISTRATION OF STUDENTS

1.0 General

(i).    candidate shall only be regarded as a bona fide student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University from the point in time when he would have undergone the full process of registration and matriculation.

(ii)     A full-time student of the University shall not attend to a full-time job at the same time.

(iii).    Every student must register at the beginning of each session to retain his studentship of the University.

(iv)     Registration exercise for each academic session shall take place within the period so designated in the calendar of events for the first semester of that session.

(v)      Only a bona fide student of the University shall be issued with a student’s identity card.

(vi)     All activities and each management function of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is executed online by logging on to UNIZIK website.

(vii)     Procedure and guideline for student’s registration as approved by senate shall be published by the Registrar at the beginning of each session.

2.0     Composition of Registration Bodies

2.1. Instruction to all Students

The registration of students for the two semesters in a session shall take place in the first week of the first semester of each academic year. Both full-time and part-time students shall complete registration within the designated period for registration.

(i)       Statement of result shall be presented by all fresh student at registration. However, all fresh students who qualified more than four (4) years earlier must present original certificates. Only certificates (and not statements of result) for examinations written more than four (4) years earlier shall be accepted for registration.

(ii)     Before uploading the list of registered courses, the student shall printed copy of the form and take it to his academic adviser for final approval

(iii)     A registered student of the University may apply for voluntary withdrawal from the University.

(iv)    A registered student of the University may make corrections on the course he registered for in a given semester with the ADD/DROP form which may be obtained from his Faculty Secretary (See Appendix IV). The Head of Department after endorsing the form should forward it to MICTU. No course may be added or dropped after the first three (3) weeks of the semester.

2.2 Late Registration

(i)     After one week of registration, two (2) weeks shall be allowed for the registration.

(ii)    After the expiration of the normal period of registration, the student shall be required to pay the prescribed late registration fee, and after the period of late registration, any student who has not registered shall be required to repeat one academic year.

(iii)   The late registration fee shall be paid even by those who started the registration process in time but could not complete it within the one week initial registration period. The late registration fee payable depend on when the registration was eventually completed.

(iv)   All registration hall end with the second week of late registration. Only on exceptionally strong reasons as may be determined by the Vice Chancellor, can any student be registered after this time.

(v)   Upon the close of late registration, every prospective new student or old student of the University who had not formally withdrawn from the University or had not deferred his admission, shall be deemed to have forfeited his offer of admission or his studentship as the case may be for the session.

2.3.   Nominal Roll of Students

(i)    Within 2 (two) weeks of the end of registration, the nominal rolls of students shall be distributed by the Management  information and

Communication Technology Unit (MICTU) as follows:

–         to each Head of Department. The nominal roll of all students for each level and for each course in his Department;

–          to each Dean of Faculty, the nominal roll of all students for each level, for each course and for all Departments in his Faculty.

–          to the Director of General Studies, the nominal roll of all students who registered for GS course;

–          the comprehensive roll of all students in the University to the following officers: Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University Librarian, Bursar, Director of Academic Planning, Dean of Students’ Affairs, Director of Medical Services, Services, Deputy Registrar (Records), Deputy Registrar (Admissions).

(ii)     A special comprehensive normal roll of all students with the names arranged in alphabetical order and containing the students Registration Number, Sex, Date of Birth, Department. Year of study, State of Origin and Local Government Area shall be produce by the MICTU annually for the following officers: Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Dean of Students Affairs, Chief Security Officer and Director, Academic Planning.

(iii)  Not later than four (4) weeks after the beginning of the sessions each Head of Department shall prepare three (3) sets of class albums for each level.
